As is probably painfully obvious from the last couple of songs I've posted, I'm compiling my music for a summer in New York. The Big Pear, as my friend Lou Brannigan would say. So here's another great NY-themed song, by Amanda Lear, a sort of Italo-Doom, Escape From New York-esque meditation on the future of the city.

Written in 1981, Lear finds herself in a bleak dystopian New York of 1990, and she's just walking around basically. Class. From the album Incognito.

The first track on Tuesday night's Beats In Space show was a remix of this song by Hercules & Love Affair, and I had to find the original for the vocal. The vocal is amazing. One of the best melodies I've come across in a long time. The only fault I can find with the tune is that it's not long enough, even at over four and a half minutes; on my fifth listen in a row already today.

JACKIE MITTOO - MASH DOWN BABYLON

For my money this is the best reggae song going. It possesses all the spacey hallmarks of dub (lots of delay basically), and since I first heard it maybe 8 years ago, nothing beats it in my opinion. Anyone got any other dub/reggae/dancehall classics? Enlighten me!

I'm listening in to Anroak N Roll, an internet show over on the Fresh Air college radio site as I type, and this week it's a retrospective of Rave between the years 1989 and 1992. Dezzie Valentine has been stoking memories of my childhood with some absolute anthems, and next week the scheduled show is on Detroit techno and Chicago house; a tantalizing prospect to say the least.
It airs live every Tuesday night from 8.30pm and can be streamed straight from the site. Well worth a listen, not just for the tunes but also for Des's rambling meanderings which are highly entertaining.

So, I was reminded of this song  by Blake Baxter, an acid house banger that blows the arse of one like no other song can blow the arse off one. You can buy the record here.

FIRST OF THE MONTH: UNDERWORLD - RIVER OF BASS

Might be a regular monthly thing, might not be a regular monthly thing, but at this moment in time I'm going to say this will be a regular monthly thing. I'll post an oldish tune that I think deserves to be heard again, hopefully it'll be one you know, one that you remember and one that you love.


So this month it's Underworld's River Of Bass. Weather's starting to get nicer, there's a bit of a stretch in the evenings now, and aesthetically this song encapsulates a lot of that feeling. Maybe you'll have a barbecue soon and you might stick this on. Maybe not. Up to you. Here it is anyway, from 1994's Dubnobasswithmyheadman. It's a great song.

Not the most thought-provoking song title I've ever come across, but a great song nonetheless. It's taken from the recent If This Is House I Want My Money Back compilation where this tune by Mugwump sits alongside others by Hunee, 6th Borough Project and Neville Watson to name but three. You may have heard The Juan Maclean's remix of The Tough Alliance's A New Chance, and as good as it is, I prefer by far the remix by Tanlines. More personal and subtle, and full of the tropical sounds that are now synonymous with the band. They've just released they're debut EP Settings on True Panther, this is the opener from it. You'll see what I mean with the tropical buzz. Brilliant.

Set for release this month on Splendid Lo-Fi, Antonio O' Duibhir's debut effort is full of soul. At turns deep, raw and musical, Who Knows is a great representation of him as a proper house producer. He's also involved with the DeepIntoTheBowelsOfHouse club nights which take place every Thursday in The Turk's Head in Dublin. Buzz down if you ever get the opportunity. In the meantime, here's the title track from the Ep as well as a mix from himself and fellow Boweller Max Conte.

House of House have made an impeccable piece of music. Almost untouchable. For me, Rushing To Paradise (Walkin' These Streets) embodies everything I love about house music. The tension of the build, the eventual satisfaction of a mounting rhythm reaching its apex. The song contains several incremental kick-ins, a great vocal sample and some gorgeous piano. Look just listen for yourself, it's absolutely amazing. Apparently it was out of stock for ages, but I'm pretty sure you can pick it up here. Oliver "Liv" Spencer of Still Going fame makes up half of the duo.
